ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Asphyxia

Asphyxia is what happens when you can't breathe air into your body. You need air to live and breathe, just like how you need food and water to stay healthy. When you can't breathe in air, your body doesn't get enough oxygen, which is what it needs to work properly.

It's kind of like when you hold your breath underwater for too long while swimming. After a while, your body starts to feel funny and you might feel like you can't move your arms or legs. That's because your body doesn't have enough oxygen to keep going.

Asphyxia can happen in different ways, like if something is covering your face and you can't get air in, or if you're in a room with no air. It's also why you should never put a plastic bag over your head or play with things like ropes or cords that can wrap around your neck and make it hard to breathe.

If someone is having trouble breathing, it's very important to get them help right away so they can get the oxygen they need.
