Ok kiddo, let's talk about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States during a time called the Civil War. The Civil War was when some states in the United States wanted to leave and make their own country. Lincoln wanted to keep the United States together and end slavery, which is when people were forced to work for others without getting paid.
In 1865, Lincoln went to a theater to watch a play with his wife. There was a man named John Wilkes Booth who didn't like Lincoln and was part of a group that wanted to hurt him. During the play, Booth snuck up behind Lincoln and shot him in the head.
Lincoln was very hurt and was taken to a place called a hospital, but he died the next day. People all over the country were very sad and angry that someone would hurt their leader. The man who shot Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth, ran away and was later found and killed by the police.
Even though Lincoln died, his ideas about ending slavery and keeping the United States together are still very important and celebrated today.
