ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Astroid

An asteroid is a chunk of rock that flies around in space. Just like you might see rocks on the ground outside, asteroids are like giant space rocks! Some of them are really big, while others are much smaller.

Asteroids can come from many different places in space. Some of them may be pieces of rock left over from when the solar system formed. Others may have been broken off of bigger objects by collisions in space.

When asteroids orbit around the sun, they can sometimes come close to Earth. But don't worry, they usually aren't a danger to us! Scientists and astronomers keep a close eye on asteroids and can predict where they will go, so we can stay safe.

Some asteroids are really interesting because they may have different materials inside of them, like metals or even water! Scientists study asteroids to learn more about the solar system and our universe.
