Atrisco Land Grant

Okay, kiddo, let me tell you a story about something called the Atrisco Land Grant.

A really long time ago, before even your grandparents were born, there were people called Spanish colonizers who came to what is now known as New Mexico. They wanted to claim the land for themselves, but there were already people living there called Native Americans.

The Spanish colonizers decided to create land grants, which were like big pieces of land that they claimed for themselves. One of these land grants was given to a man named Don Fernando de Luna y Arellano, and it was called the Atrisco Land Grant.

This land grant was so big that it covered much of what we now know as Albuquerque, including the Bosque and the South Valley. When Don Fernando died, he passed the land down to his family.

But then, something really unfair happened. The United States government took the Atrisco Land Grant away from the Luna family, even though it was rightfully theirs. This made the Luna family and all the people who had been living on the land very angry and sad.

For a long time, the Atrisco Land Grant was fought over in court. But eventually, the Luna family won back some of the land, and the rest was turned into a government agency called the Atrisco Land Grant.

Today, many people still remember what happened with the Atrisco Land Grant and work hard to protect the rights of the Luna family and the people who live on the land.
