ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

August Krogh

August Krogh was a really smart man from Denmark who lived a long time ago. He was born in 1874 and died in 1949. He was a scientist who studied the body and how it works. He wanted to understand how things like blood and oxygen move around inside us, and why we need them to live.

August Krogh did a lot of experiments to learn about how different living things work, like fish that can live underwater, and frogs that can breathe through their skin. He even did experiments on himself to see how his body reacted to things like exercise and different types of food.

One really cool thing August Krogh discovered was how our blood vessels work. He found out that our tiny blood vessels called capillaries actually grow and shrink depending on what our body needs. If we are exercising, our capillaries grow so our muscles can get more blood and oxygen. If we are just relaxing, they shrink back down. This helps our bodies work efficiently and stay healthy.

August Krogh was so good at understanding how the body works that he won a big prize called the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1920. This means he was one of the smartest people in the world at his job!
