ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aureole effect

Okay kiddo, imagine you're playing outside on a sunny day. When you look up at the sun, you might see a glowing circle around it in the sky. That's kind of like the aureole effect!

The aureole effect happens when you see a halo or a glowing circle around a bright object, like the sun or a streetlight at night. It's caused by tiny particles in the air, like dust or water droplets, getting in the way of the light and scattering it in all different directions.

This makes the light spread out, creating a beautiful circle of colors or a halo effect around the object. Sometimes it can also make the object appear bigger or brighter than it really is!

So next time you're playing outside and see a glowing circle in the sky or around a streetlight, you can impress your friends by telling them all about the aureole effect!
