ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Australian Aboriginal enumeration

Okay kiddo, so you know how we count things right? Like if we have five toys, we count "1, 2, 3, 4, 5". Well, sometimes grown-ups need to count how many people there are in a certain country. They have to do this to understand more about the people who live there and what they might need to make their lives better.

One group of people who live in Australia are called the Aboriginal people. They have lived there for thousands of years and have their own special cultures and ways of doing things. Sometimes, the grown-ups who count how many people are living in Australia want to know how many Aboriginal people there are.

When they do this, they need to do something called an enumeration. That's just a big word that means they go around and try to count every single Aboriginal person who lives in Australia. They have to be very careful when they do this because they want to make sure they don't miss anyone by accident.

The grown-ups who do the enumeration might visit Aboriginal communities, or they might ask people to fill out forms to help them count. Sometimes, they might use technology like computers or satellites to help them count too! Once they have counted everyone, they can use that information to help Aboriginal people and make sure they have what they need to live happy and healthy lives.
