ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Authorization hold

Imagine you're going to a store with your mom to buy a toy. Your mom needs to use her credit card to pay for the toy. Before your mom can use her credit card, the store needs to make sure that she has enough money to pay for the toy. To do this, the store puts a hold on the money in her account. That means they don't take the money, but they don't let your mom use it either.

This hold is called an authorization hold. It's like the store is holding onto the money for a little while, just to make sure it's there. Once the store is sure that the money is there, they take the money and give your mom the toy.

The same thing can happen when you use your credit card to buy things online or at a hotel. The store or hotel will put a hold on your account to make sure you have enough money to pay for the things you want to buy. But don't worry, the hold doesn't last forever. It usually goes away in a few days, once the money has been taken out of your account.
