ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Automatic generation control

Automatic Generation Control (AGC) is like a mom or dad in charge of keeping a room at the right temperature. The room is like the electric grid, which is made up of the power plants, wires, and other things that bring electricity to our homes and businesses. The goal of AGC is to make sure that there is always just the right amount of electricity being produced to keep the grid stable and keep the lights on.

AGC works by using sensors, kind of like those on a thermometer, to measure how much electricity is being used in the grid. It then uses that information to tell the power plants how much electricity to produce. Think of it like someone telling a heater to turn on or off based on whether the room is too hot or too cold.

The power plants must work together and change how much electricity they produce to meet the needs of the grid. This is because if too much electricity is produced, the grid can become unstable and cause problems, and if there is not enough, some places may lose power. AGC helps to make sure that the power produced by each plant is just right to meet the needs of the grid and maintain a stable supply of electricity.

Overall, think of AGC as a watchful mom or dad who makes sure that the room (the electric grid) is comfortable and everything is okay.
