ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aveira

Okay, so imagine you're playing a game with your friends and some of the rules say that you shouldn't do certain things like cheat or be mean to each other. These rules are very important because if you don't follow them, it can make the game not as fun for everyone.

Just like that, aveira is a word in Hebrew that means "to stray" or "to sin". In Jewish religion, they have rules that are called mitzvot and these rules are meant to help people live good and happy lives. Aveira is when someone breaks one of these rules and does something that is considered wrong or bad.

For example, if someone steals something, that's considered aveira because it goes against one of the mitzvot which says that we should not take things that don't belong to us.

Aveira is a very important concept in Jewish religion because it reminds people that they should always try to do the right thing and follow the rules. Just like in your game, if everyone follows the rules, then everyone can have a lot of fun and be happy together.
