ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aversives

Alright kiddo, so aversives are things that we don't like, that make us uncomfortable or unhappy.

Let's say you don't like the taste of vegetables. If someone makes you eat broccoli every day, and you get upset or cry, that person would be using an aversive. Basically, they are trying to make you stop disliking broccoli by making it unpleasant for you to not eat it.

Now, aversives can be used in lots of different situations, not just with food. For instance, if you are nervous about public speaking and you avoid it, a teacher might use an aversive by making you give a speech in class so you can get over your fear.

It's important to note that sometimes aversives are used as a way to control people, and that is not okay. It's also important to understand that sometimes aversives can be harmful or abusive, so it's important to speak up if something doesn't feel right.

Overall, aversives simply mean things that we find unpleasant or uncomfortable that are used to try and change our behavior.
