ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Axiom of determinacy

Okay kiddo, first let me explain what an axiom is. An axiom is like a rule that we use when we're trying to figure out things. Like when you play a game with your friends, you have rules that you follow to play the game right?

Now, the axiom of determinacy is a rule that helps us figure out some math problems. The axiom says that any game that we play with each other has to have a winner. So if you and your friends are playing a game, one of you HAS to win.

This rule helps us with some really big math problems called "set theory". Set theory is kind of like when we're trying to put things from different groups into one group.

The axiom of determinacy helps us solve some of these set theory problems because it tells us that we can always figure out who the winner is when we put things together in a group, like in a game.

But not everyone agrees with this rule. Some math people think that there might be games where there is no winner, even though we're playing by the rules. And they think that we should be able to figure that out too. So the axiom of determinacy is kind of a big deal in math, because people are trying to figure out if it's really true or not.
