Baba Marta

Okay, so Baba Marta is a very important holiday in Bulgaria. It happens on March 1st every year and it's all about celebrating the coming of spring.

Baba Marta is a mythical figure who is said to control the weather. She's an old lady who wears lots of red and white clothes and carries a big stick. You might see people wearing red and white bracelets or ribbons on this day because they believe it will bring them good luck and keep Baba Marta happy.

Some people also make special dolls called Pizho and Penda out of red and white yarn. These dolls are supposed to represent Baba Marta and her brother and are meant to be given as gifts to friends and family.

Now, the really fun thing about Baba Marta is something called the "Martenitsi tradition". People make little red and white pom-poms (like tiny balls of yarn) that they wear on their clothes or put on trees or bushes. They do this to welcome spring and show Baba Marta that they're happy for her to bring warmer weather.

At the end of March, when the weather starts to get warmer, people take off their Martenitsi and tie them to a tree or bury them in the ground. This is supposed to bring even more luck and happiness for the coming year.

So, Baba Marta is basically all about celebrating the change of seasons from winter to spring and making sure Baba Marta is happy so she'll bring good weather. It's a really fun and colorful holiday that's enjoyed by lots of people in Bulgaria.
