ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Back-translation

Hi there! Back-translation is like a game of telephone, but with different languages. You know how in the game of telephone you whisper a message to the person next to you and they whisper it to the next person until it gets to the end and the message is usually different than the original? In back-translation, we do the same thing but with languages.

Let's say I have an English sentence, "I am going to the store." and I want to translate it to Spanish. First, I would find a person who speaks Spanish and have them translate the sentence for me. They might say, "Voy a la tienda." But, I want to make sure that the translation is accurate. So, I take the Spanish sentence, and give it to someone who speaks English to translate it back to English.

If the person gets, "I am going to the store," as the result, that means the translation was accurate. But, if they get something different like "I am heading towards the shop", then that means the original translation was not accurate.

We can do this process again and again until we get a translation that is accurate. It's like playing a game of telephone, but with languages!
