Bagnall fireless locomotives (preserved)

Okay, little buddy, have you ever seen a train that runs on fire? No? Well, some trains use coal or wood to make a fire, which creates steam that makes the train go. But, there is another type of train that doesn’t need a fire to make steam! They are called “fireless locomotives” and they work like a hot water bottle.

The “Bagnall Fireless Locomotive” is a special type of train that doesn’t have any fire on its own. Instead, it gets all its steam from a special insulated tank that’s filled with boiling hot water. The steam that is made from the hot water is used to make the train go. So, when the train needs to move, steam is released from the insulated tank which pushes a piston that turns the wheels and off it goes!

Now, imagine if you had a special water bottle that could keep your hot cocoa really hot for a long time. That’s kind of like what the insulated tank on the Bagnall Fireless Locomotive does. It keeps the water very, very hot so that the train can travel further and longer without having to stop and make more steam.

There are some Bagnall Fireless Locomotives that are still around today even though they were built a long time ago. People take care of them and treat them like special treasures so that everyone can learn about how special they are. And that's about it kiddo! Do you have any questions?
