ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Balancing (international relations)

Okay kiddo, let me explain balancing in international relations. Imagine you have a bunch of toys that you want to play with. But some of the other kids in the playground also want your toys. They might try to take them away from you or even fight with you over them.

Now, if you have a big brother who is really strong and likes to protect you, he might come over and stand next to you while you play. This will make the other kids think twice about trying to take your toys or picking a fight with you. They will see that you have someone strong on your side and they will be less likely to mess with you.

In international relations, countries sometimes need to balance power to make sure they stay safe from other countries that might want to harm them. They do this by forming alliances with other strong countries. By doing this, they can show other countries that they have a strong friend who will stand up for them if needed. This can help prevent conflicts and keep everyone safe.

So, just like having a big brother to protect your toys, countries use balancing to protect themselves from harmful forces and keep the peace.
