Banchō Sarayashiki is a spooky story from Japan about a girl named Okiku who worked as a servant in a big castle. One day, she broke a valuable dish and was very scared of what would happen to her, so she hid the broken pieces instead of telling anyone. The lord of the castle found out and was very angry. He tried to make her confess by scaring her with ghosts and saying that he would forgive her if she came clean. But Okiku was so scared that she died.
After she died, people said they saw her ghost walking around the castle at night, counting plates up to nine and then screaming very loudly. They said her ghost kept doing this until someone found the missing plate and returned it to where it belonged.
The story of Banchō Sarayashiki is still remembered in Japan today and is often used as an example of how telling the truth is important, even when we make mistakes.
