ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bantu expansion

So imagine you and your family live in a big house with lots of other families around you. Everyone speaks the same language and has similar traditions. One day, your family decides to take a walk and explore the world outside of your neighborhood.

As you walk, you come across different neighborhoods with different houses and people who speak different languages and have different traditions. Some of these people are friendly and some are not so friendly.

Over time, more and more families from your neighborhood decide to take similar walks and explore new areas. You all start to spread out and make new homes in these different neighborhoods.

This is kind of like what happened with the Bantu expansion. Thousands of years ago, a group of people who spoke the Bantu language lived in one area of Africa. They started to take walks and explore new areas, meeting new people and settling in new areas.

Over time, more and more groups of people who spoke the Bantu language did the same thing, spreading out across Africa and even into other parts of the world. They brought their language and traditions with them, but also learned new things from the people they met along the way.

Eventually, the Bantu peoples became one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa, with many different languages and cultures within their group. But it all started with some curious families deciding to explore the world around them.
