So imagine you have a bunch of long, thin and bendy pieces of material. We can call them strips, like when you rip apart a piece of paper into long thin pieces. Now, we want to make something useful or pretty with these strips, and basket weaving is one way to do it!
To start off, we take a strip and fold it in half, creating a loop. Then we take another strip and put it over the loop, and under it, and over the loop again. It's like making a squiggly road across the loop.
We keep doing this, alternating the strips going over and under each other, and slowly it starts to create a pattern. We can change the colors of the strips to make a colorful design.
Next, we take the end of the strip and weave it back in the opposite direction. So if the strip went over, it now goes under. We then add another strip, and do the same thing over and under. We keep doing this until we have a big enough piece for our basket.
Now, we need to make the sides of the basket. So we take the strip on the side and bend it up, weaving another strip over and under it to keep it in place. We keep doing this all around the piece we made until it has sides that can hold things inside!
If we want a lid, we can make a bigger piece and then weave it onto the top, making sure it fits snugly onto the basket.
And that's how basket weaving works, it's like making a squiggly road with strips to create a strong and pretty basket!
