Battles for Shimonoseki
So, a long time ago, there was a place called Shimonoseki in Japan. Different groups of people wanted to control it because it was an important port and had a lot of money.
Some people from outside of Japan, like the British and French, also wanted to have access to Shimonoseki so they could trade goods.
But the people who were already in control of Shimonoseki didn't want to let anyone else take over. So, they started fighting against the people who wanted to control the area.
These battles were very intense and lasted for a long time. Lots of people were hurt and many died. It was not a very happy time for anyone involved.
Eventually, a treaty was signed that allowed the foreigners to have access to Shimonoseki and the fighting stopped.
