Behcet's Disease

Behcet's disease is a condition that can make you feel very unwell. It happens because your immune system is not working properly. Your immune system is like an army inside your body that helps to fight off germs and keep you healthy.

With Behcet's disease, sometimes your immune system gets confused and starts to attack healthy cells in your body instead of just germs. This can cause bumps or sores on your skin, especially in your mouth and on your private parts. It can also cause inflammation (redness and swelling) in your eyes, which can make it hard to see.

Sometimes, Behcet's disease can also cause problems with your gut (tummy) or your joints (the parts of your body that help you move). This can make it hard to eat or walk around easily.

Doctors can help to treat the symptoms of Behcet's disease with medicines that can help to reduce inflammation in your body. They might also suggest changes to your diet or lifestyle to help keep you comfortable. While there is currently no cure for Behcet's disease, with the right treatment many people with this condition can still lead happy, healthy lives.
