ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bell numbers

Imagine you have a bunch of toys in a bin. You want to count how many different ways you can take out some toys from the bin. You might take out one, two, or three toys at a time. You can repeat taking out toys again and again until you have taken out all the toys or you are tired.

Bell numbers are like counting the number of ways you can take out toys from the bin. They tell you how many different ways you can divide a set of items into groups. You can split the items into groups of different sizes. Bell numbers can help you figure out how many different ways you can do that.

For example, if you have three toys in a bin, the Bell number for three is two. That means there are two different ways to divide three objects into groups. You could have all three toys in one group or two toys in one group and one toy in another group.

Bell numbers get bigger as the size of the set gets bigger. If you have four toys in a bin, the Bell number is five. That means that there are five different ways to divide four toys into groups. You can have all four toys in one group, three and one toy in two groups, two and two in two groups, and so on.

So, Bell numbers are a way to count how many different ways you can split a set of things into groups. They can be helpful in lots of different situations when you need to figure out all the possible ways to arrange things.
