The Bennett scale is a way to measure how thick a layer of soil is. It is also sometimes called the “Bennett thickness”. To measure the thickness of a soil layer, you use a ruler to measure the distance from the top (or surface) of the soil layer down to the layer of material below it. The thickness is then expressed in units of centimeters (cm), which is like measuring your height in inches but smaller. The Bennett scale is important for understanding the different properties of the soil, like how deep the roots of a plant can go, and how much water and nutrients it can hold.
