ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Berth (moorings)

When a big boat like a ship or a yacht comes into a harbor or a port, it needs to stop somewhere so it doesn't float away. This stopping place is called a "berth" or a "mooring."

Think of it like your bed. When you go to sleep at night, you need a safe and stable place to rest. A berth is like a bed for boats to "sleep" in while they are in the port.

A berth can be made of different things, like a dock or a pier, and it's designed to keep the boat steady and prevent it from drifting away. The boat will tie up to the berth with ropes or chains to hold it in place.

Different types of boats need different types of berths. For example, a really big ship might need a deepwater berth that's farther away from the shore, while a smaller boat might be able to use a smaller berth closer to the land.

Berths are important for keeping boats safe and for making sure the port stays organized. Without berths, boats would have nowhere to park and it would be chaos on the water!
