Betamax was a type of video cassette recorder (VCR) that was popular in the 1980s. It allowed people to record and watch movies and TV shows at home. You inserted a Betamax cassette tape into the machine, then you could press the record button to record a movie or TV show from your TV, or press play to watch something that was already recorded. Betamax lost out to VHS, another type of video cassette recorder, because VHS tapes were larger, so they could hold more video.
