Betel container (Victoria & Albert Museum)

Okay kiddo, do you know what chewing gum is? People used to chew something called "betel," which wasn't gum but a leaf that they put other things on to make it taste good. It was something that people in Asia and parts of Africa did for a long time. They would put things like areca nut, tobacco, and spices on the betel leaf to make a tasty combo that they would chew.

Now imagine that you have all of those things in the palm of your hand. You can't just chew on it like gum because it would make a big mess, right? That's where the betel container comes in.

A betel container is a small box, made from metal or other materials, that people would use to keep all of their betel ingredients in one place. These containers would often have different compartments for each ingredient, so they could easily access what they needed.

The Victoria & Albert Museum has a special betel container that is really pretty. It's made from gold and has different designs and patterns all over it. It was used in India a long, long time ago, and is a special piece of history. Now, it is kept in the museum so that people can learn about how people in different parts of the world used to live and enjoy things like chewing betel.
