ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Better dead than red

"Better dead than red" was a motto or saying that people used during the Cold War. It means that some people thought that it was better to die in a war than to live in a society where the government controls everything and people don't have any freedom. They used the color red to represent Communism, which is a type of government where the government controls everything and people don't have much say in what happens. Some people were very afraid of Communism and thought that it was a very bad thing, so they would say "better dead than red" to show how much they didn't like it. But, it's not a good idea to say this and wish people to die because it's always better to try and find peaceful solutions instead of going to war.
