Bioinspiration and biomimetics are about learning from nature to help us design better technology. We look at how things in nature grow and develop and how they solve problems and use that to help us make better things like robots, clothes and energy sources. For example, scientists studying a bat’s wings noticed that their wings had bumps on the surface that allowed them to fly better. This inspired scientists to put the same sort of bumps on the wings of a robot to help it fly better too. Similarly, clothing companies look at how animals are able to keep warm in cold weather, and they use that same knowledge to help them make clothes that will keep us warm too. So it’s like taking ideas from nature and using them to make our stuff better.
