Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) is a system used to categorize medicines based on how they are absorbed and how they enter your body. It is important because it helps doctors and pharmacists decide what type of medicine will work best for certain patients. BCS puts drugs into four different categories based on how they are absorbed- Class I, Class II, Class III, and Class IV. Class I medicines are easily absorbed and quickly released into your bloodstream. Class II medicines are slowly absorbed and not always released into your bloodstream. Class III medicines are not absorbed at all or take a long time to be absorbed and released. Class IV medicines are absorbed very slowly and release slowly into your bloodstream. Knowing which BCS class a medicine belongs to can help healthcare professionals choose the best medicine for a patient’s needs.
