ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bishop and knight checkmate

Okay kiddo, so you know how in chess, you have different pieces that move in different ways, right? Well, one of the ways that two pieces called the bishop and the knight can work together is to checkmate the other player's king.

Now, a checkmate is when you trap the enemy king so that it can't move to safety. And in this case, you can use the bishop and the knight to do it in a special way.

First, you need to move your bishop so that it is putting pressure on the enemy king. The bishop moves diagonally, so you want to put it on a square that attacks the king's position.

Next, you move your knight so that it is protecting the bishop. The knight moves in an L-shape, so you want to put it on a square that covers the bishop and also attacks the king.

If you do this right, the enemy king will be in what's called a "suffocation" position. It will be surrounded by your pieces so that it can't move anywhere. And because your bishop and knight are protecting each other, the enemy can't capture either of them.

So, the only way out for the enemy king is to move, but it can't move anywhere. That means you win the game! It's a tricky move, but if you can pull it off, you'll be a chess master in no time.
