Black Seminoles

The Black Seminoles were a group of mostly African-Americans and Seminole Indians who escaped from slavery in the southern United States to the swamps of Florida in the 19th century. They combined their African American culture with the Seminole Indian culture, creating their own unique culture and language. The Black Seminoles fought on the side of the Seminole Indians against the US forces during the three Seminole Wars in the early 1800s, eventually leading to a treaty in 1866 when the US government promised them land in exchange for their help in the fight against the other Indians. The Black Seminoles moved to their new land and continued to live there, keeping their cultural and language traditions alive to this day.
