Black people and priesthood (LDS)

In the past, there was a rule in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as the LDS Church) that said black people could not hold the priesthood. The priesthood is a religious authority or power given to worthy male members of the church to help lead and serve the members.

For a long time, the church leaders did not let black people have the priesthood. This was something that many people did not agree with, and it made some people feel sad and left out. It was like a group of friends not letting one of their friends play a game with them just because of the color of their skin.

However, in 1978, the church leaders had an important meeting where they received guidance from God. They learned that it was not right to exclude black people from the priesthood because everyone is equal and should be able to have the same opportunities to serve and lead in the church. This was a big and important change.

So, the church leaders announced that from that day forward, black people could have the priesthood, and they encouraged all church members to treat everyone equally and with love, no matter their skin color. This decision made many people happy, and it showed a big step towards equality in the church.

The church still teaches that everyone, no matter their race, is loved by God and has a place in the church. The LDS Church believes in the importance of treating everyone with kindness, respect, and fairness, just like how we should treat everyone we meet, regardless of their skin color.
