ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Black sand

Black sand is a type of sand that looks darker than regular sand. It is made up of tiny little pieces of rocks and minerals that are black in color. You might find it near the ocean or near volcanoes because these locations have a lot of these black rocks and minerals.

Now, let's talk about how black sand is formed. When hot lava from a volcano cools down quickly as it reaches the ocean, the magma (or melted rock) hardens and shatters into tiny black pieces. These pieces get mixed with the regular sand in the area and create black sand.

Black sand might look cool, but you shouldn't take it home with you as a souvenir because it's not good for the environment. Some animals use the sand to make their homes, and taking it away can harm their habitats.
