ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Blanche Monnier

Blanche Monnier was a woman who lived in France a long time ago. She was born in 1849 and grew up in a wealthy family. However, when she was 25 years old, something very strange happened.

Blanche fell in love with a man who her mother did not approve of. Her mother was very controlling and did not want Blanche to marry this man. So, her mother had Blanche locked up in a small room in their house.

Blanche was trapped in this tiny room for 25 years! She could not leave or see anyone outside of the room. Her mother brought her food and water every day, but that was it. Blanche was completely cut off from the outside world.

Finally, after all those years, someone found out about Blanche's situation. One day in 1901, neighbors heard strange noises coming from the house and they contacted the police. When the police arrived, they found Blanche in that small room, extremely weak and thin, and covered in filth.

Blanche was taken to a hospital and started to recover. She was now 52 years old and had spent half her life in that tiny room. Her mother was arrested and sent to a mental hospital.

Blanche lived for another 30 years after being rescued, but she never fully recovered from the trauma of being locked up for so long. Her story is a tragic reminder of how cruel people can be to each other.
