ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Blank verse

Okay kiddo, so you know how when we talk or sing, we use words that have a tune or a beat to them? Well, when we write words down in a poem or a play, we can use different styles of writing to make it sound interesting and pretty.

One of those styles is called blank verse. Blank verse is kind of like a special type of poem where we don't have to follow any special rules about rhyming words or how many syllables each line should have. Instead, we just write down words that sound nice when we say them out loud.

It's like when we talk normally, we don't always use rhyming words or make sure every sentence sounds the same. Sometimes we just speak and the words come out in a natural rhythm. That's what blank verse is like in writing.

Blank verse is often used in plays, like the ones Shakespeare wrote a long time ago. People like using blank verse in plays because it sounds fancy and important, but also feels natural to say out loud.

So next time you read a poem or watch a play, listen carefully to how the words sound. If they don't rhyme and they just sound natural and nice, you might be hearing blank verse!
