Bleach bypass

Okay kiddo, do you know what bleach is? It’s a chemical that can remove color from things like clothes or hair. Now, imagine that we could use bleach to make a movie look different! Bleach bypass is a special technique that does just that.

When they make a movie, the filmmakers use a lot of different colors to create different moods or atmospheres. But with bleach bypass, they leave out one important step. Normally, when they develop the film after making it, they wash the negative with bleach to remove some of the silver emulsion. This gives the movie a brighter look.

But with bleach bypass, they skip this step so the silver stays on the negative. This makes the colors look darker and gives the movie a kind of gritty, edgy feeling. So instead of a bright, happy scene, it might look like something out of a dark mystery or action movie.

So the next time you watch a movie and it looks really different, it might be because of this cool technique called bleach bypass!
