ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Born approximation

Born approximation is a way to predict how light particles interact with matter, like how they bounce off of it. It's like playing a game of pool. The balls don't always bounce off of each other in a predictable way, but you can predict what might happen if you know how hard the balls were hit and how they were lined up before the collision. In the same way, the Born approximation helps scientists predict what might happen if light particles, which are called photons, hit different kinds of matter. By looking at how the atoms are lined up, and how strong the light is, the Born approximation helps us figure out the most probable result of the collision.
