Bristol Bus Boycott, 1963

Okay kiddo, so back in 1963, there was a thing called the Bristol Bus Boycott. This happened in Bristol, which is a city in England.

Now, back then, there were different places on the bus called “sections”. White people could sit in any section they wanted, but Black people were only allowed to sit in certain sections, which wasn’t fair at all.

So a man named Paul Stephenson, who was a Black leader in the community, said enough was enough. He decided that Black people needed to protest the bus company to try to change the unfair rules.

Lots of people joined in and they refused to ride the buses until the company agreed to change the rules. This meant that they had to walk or find other ways to get around the city, but they did it because they wanted to stand up for themselves and make a difference.

After lots of hard work and bravery, the bus company finally changed the rules and Black people were allowed to sit in any section they wanted. This was a big win for equality and fairness in Bristol, and it all started because people were willing to stand up for what was right.
