ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Buckskins

Buckskins are a type of leather that is made from the skin of a deer or elk. Imagine you have a toy deer and you took off all the fur. What's left is called the skin. Now if you take this skin and cut it into pieces, you get something like a very thin blanket. This blanket has a special name: it's called the hide.

To turn the hide into buckskin, we need to do a few things. First, we need to remove all the hair from the hide. This is done by soaking the hide in a special solution that breaks down the hair. Then we scrape the hair off with a tool that looks like a big knife. Once the hair is gone, we have something that looks like a pale, pinkish-white piece of leather.

Next, we need to make the leather soft and stretchy. To do this, we soak the hide in water and then rub it with a tool called a fleshing knife. This gets rid of the thick parts of the hide and makes it thinner and more flexible. We then hang it up to dry.

Now we have what's called a "rawhide." Rawhide is not yet buckskin, but it's getting close. We need to soften it even more, and this is where the most important part of the process happens.

To make the leather very soft and stretchy, we need to "brain" it. No, we're not using a real brain – that would be gross! Instead, we use a mixture of water and animal brains (usually deer or bison brains). We rub this mixture into the rawhide until it's well-soaked, then we let it sit for a while.

After a few hours, we take the rawhide out of the brain solution and start stretching and rubbing it. This is the hardest part of the process, but it's also the most important. We use our hands to pull the leather back and forth, making it softer and more pliable. This takes a lot of strength and patience, but it's worth it, because the end result is buckskin!

Once the leather is as soft as we want it, we hang it up to dry again. Now we have something that looks like real leather, but it's much softer, stretchier, and more comfortable to wear. We can make all sorts of things out of buckskin, like shirts, pants, moccasins, and even bags or belts.

So there you have it, buckskins are leather made from the skin of a deer or elk, but they're extra special because they're soft, stretchy, and comfortable. We make them by removing the hair from the hide, making it thinner and more flexible, then soaking it in a mixture of water and animal brains. Finally, we stretch and rub the leather until it's just right, and then we let it dry.
