ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Burst dimming

When you look at something, your eyes see the light reflecting off of it. Sometimes, the brightness of that light changes really quickly. Imagine turning a light on and off really fast. That's called "burst dimming."

Some lights in our houses and streets are "LED lights." LED lights don't use as much electricity as other kinds of lights, so they're better for our planet. But sometimes, lots of LED lights in a row will start doing burst dimming.

Here's why: the LED lights all talk to each other, like your toys that talk to each other when you play with them. They're saying "hey, we're all supposed to be the same brightness!" But sometimes, one of the lights gets a little too hot or too cold, and it can't stay the same brightness. When that happens, all the other lights start trying to adjust to match it, and that's when burst dimming happens.

It might look strange, but it's not dangerous. And some smart people are working on ways to make sure it happens less often!
