ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Business letter

Okay, so you know how when you want to talk to someone far away and you can't see them, you can write a letter to them? A business letter is a special kind of letter that people write when they want to talk to other people about business things like work or money.

Let's say you want to write a letter to your teacher to tell them that you can't come to school because you're sick. You'd write the date at the top of the letter and then start with "Dear Teacher," because that's polite. Then you'd say something like "I'm sorry I can't come to school today because I'm not feeling well." You might also thank the teacher for something or ask a question about school work.

When grown-ups write business letters, they do it in a similar way but they have to be more careful about the things they say because they represent a company or organization. They usually use special paper with the company's name and address at the top and use formal language like "Dear Sir or Madam" instead of "Dear Teacher." They might also give important information like dates, times, and numbers, and they might ask for something like a job or a payment.

So, a business letter is like a grown-up version of the letters you might write to your friends or family, but it's specifically used for talking about important things related to work and money.
