Okay kiddo, do you know what a manuscript is? It’s like a really old book that was written by hand a loooooong time ago.
So, in the olden days, there was this great empire called the Byzantine Empire. And one of the things people there liked to do was make manuscripts. But not just any manuscripts – they wanted to make them super cool and pretty by putting in lots of pictures and colors.
They would use special paints and gold leaf to decorate the pages with pictures of people, animals, and plants. And sometimes they would write words in fancy letters that were also decorated with colors and gold.
These manuscripts were usually made by monks in special places called scriptoriums. The monks were really patient and took their time to make sure everything was perfect.
Now, imagine you have a storybook, with lots of awesome pictures and colors on every page. That’s basically what a Byzantine illuminated manuscript looked like. They were very special and very beautiful, and people still admire them today for their artistry and skill.
