ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

CD/DVD based immunoassay

Okay kiddo, so you know how CDs and DVDs are shiny discs that can store information like music or movies? Well, scientists can use a similar kind of shiny disc to test for certain things in your body that might make you sick.

This shiny disc is covered in tiny little spots, like a ladybug's spots, and each spot has something different on it that can help detect an illness or infection. It's called an immunoassay because it helps your body's immune system find things that might harm you.

When the disc is put in a machine and a sample of blood or other body fluid is added to it, the spots will react to anything in the sample that matches what they're looking for. If the spots light up, that means there's something in the sample that the scientists need to pay attention to.

This can help doctors diagnose diseases like COVID-19 or cancer, or even detect certain drugs in someone's system. It's a really cool way to use shiny discs to help keep us healthy!
