ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

CIELAB color space

CIELAB color space is like a special way to describe colors. It helps people understand and communicate about what colors they see.

First, imagine a rainbow of colors. CIELAB color space takes some special measurements of these colors to create a chart that makes it easier to talk about them.

The chart has three parts, just like a map has three directions (north, south, east, west). The three parts of the CIELAB chart are called L, a, and b.

L tells us how light or dark a color is. It goes from 0, which is black, to 100, which is white. Imagine a very dark cave is 0 and a bright sunny day is 100.

a tells us how much red or green a color has. It goes from -100, which is very green, to 100, which is very red. Imagine a green forest is -100 and a red apple is 100.

b tells us how much blue or yellow a color has. It goes from -100, which is very blue, to 100, which is very yellow. Imagine a blue sky is -100 and a yellow sunflower is 100.

When we put these three parts together, we can describe any color we see. For example, if we see a bright pink shade, we would say it has a high L value (because it's light), a high a value (because it's a mix of red and white), and a low b value (because it's not very yellow or blue).

CIELAB color space helps people talk about colors in a more detailed and accurate way, so everyone can understand and agree on what color they're talking about.
