Okay kiddo, do you remember playing with your toy car and running it over a play dough to make tracks? Now, imagine that the play dough is actually a block of metal, and instead of a toy car, we use a special machine called a CNC mill.
This machine uses computer programs to guide a spinning tool to cut out shapes in the metal block. But instead of cutting everything at once, we use a technique called pocket milling.
Pocket milling is like digging a hole in the metal block, but instead of using a shovel, we use the spinning tool to cut little bits of metal at a time. This way, we can make a hole with very precise and smooth edges.
We can also use pocket milling to make all kinds of shapes, not just holes. We can make grooves, or curves, or even complex designs.
And the best part is, because the machine is controlled by a computer program, we can make lots of identical shapes very quickly and accurately. Just like how you can make lots of toy car tracks with your play dough if you have a mold!
