ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cam switch

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with a light switch in your room? When you flip the switch one way, the light turns on, and when you flip it the other way, the light turns off. That's what a switch does, it turns something on or off.

Now imagine a big switch, like the kind you might see in a factory or on a big machine. This kind of switch is called a cam switch. It's made up of a circle of little switches that can be turned on or off by a rotating wheel with bumps on it called a cam.

Each little switch is connected to a different part of the machine or factory, and when the cam turns and bumps into a switch, it turns that thing on or off.

So, let's say the machine needs to start up. The cam turns and bumps into the switch that's connected to the motor, and then the motor starts running. Then the cam turns some more and bumps into the switch that's connected to a different part of the machine, and that part is turned on.

It's kind of like when you play with a toy that has different buttons that make it do different things. You press one button and the toy makes a noise, then you press another button and the toy moves. The cam switch is kind of like that, but for really big machines!
