Canals of Great Britain

Canals are like big ditches filled with water that were built a long time ago in Great Britain. They were built so that boats could travel from one place to another without having to go all the way around on a river or go around a big hill.

People used to fill the canals with water from streams and rivers. Boats would float in the water and be pulled by horses who walked along the banks of the canal.

People used the canals to move things like coal, bricks, and other heavy things because it was easier and faster than using carts or horses. This made it cheaper to transport things, so people could sell them for less money.

Today, some of the canals are still used for boats, but mostly for pleasure trips or tourism. People can take a ride on a boat and see the beautiful scenery along the canals.
