ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Caning (furniture)

So, you know how chairs and some other furniture have a squishy part where you sit or lean your back? Well, sometimes instead of using soft materials like cushions, people use something called cane.

Cane is like a bunch of tiny sticks that are woven together to make a flat surface. It might look like a basket weave or a checkerboard pattern.

To add cane to a piece of furniture, you need a special kind of chair or table that has little holes or slots cut into it. Then you weave the cane through the holes or slots so that it lays flat on the seat, backrest, or other part of the furniture.

After the cane is all woven in, you might need to trim the edges to make it look neat and tidy.

So, in summary, caning is a way to make furniture that's like a woven mat or flat surface made from tiny sticks called cane.
