ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Carbon rift

Carbon rift is the idea that the rich (rich countries, corporations, and people) are responsible for more of the world's carbon dioxide emissions than everyone else. Carbon dioxide is a type of gas that is released into the air when we use energy, such as burning gas or coal. The more carbon dioxide that gets released, the more the climate changes and our planet gets warmer. So the idea behind the carbon rift is that the rich are using too much energy, while the poor are using less, and it's causing our planet to warm up too much. To fix this, the rich need to reduce the amount of energy they are using and help the poor get clean energy so they don't have to use dirty energy sources like coal and gas.
