Carpenter v. United States

Carpenter v. United States is a Supreme Court decision from 2018. It's about whether the police need a warrant from a judge before getting information from cell phone companies about a person's location.

The police usually get this kind of information without a warrant, but the Supreme Court said that in this case the police should have asked a judge for permission. The Court said that the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution protects people's right to be free from unreasonable searches. This means that if the police want to find out something about a person that they have to have permission from a judge first.
